Unit 22 task 1: Write your own brief.

PASS TASK
Write your own brief for Urban Net – what is your idea?
Which existing Artist’s Music Video or Channel Ident are you adapting or developing?
I will be adapting an 10 second ident from the older ident for e4. The ident had the old channel 4 logo falls over then smashes into toy bricks.

What content are you adapting or developing from the existing products?
I will be creating a stop-motion 10 second ident for the new youth TV channel Urban Net.

Who is the existing audience it is aimed at?
age – 15-25 year old
gender- Both genders
ethnicity-  All ethnicity’s
subculture – Pop
What is your initial idea?
My original idea was to create a 30 second ident for the channel Urban Net. This idea had the U and N of the logo come to live, grab a suitcase and travel across different areas. Then arriving at a youth’s home to be picked up by the youth and then explode into a bunch of mini Urban Nets.

MERIT and DISTINCTION Task 5: Write up your annotation and your final developed and chosen idea

Having completed your research activities looking at existing products, formats and audience research use the findings to shape an effective idea.

The chosen idea will be developed to consider the finer details

Task 5b)
Conclusion - how do your research findings develop your idea?
Cover each of  the following ‘finer details’ in your response:
(MERIT) How did what you found out affect the development of your idea?
(DISTINCTION) Define how you will use this in your idea to make you product effective?
Shots, angles and framing
While looking at various idents for my project I noticed they tend to include different camera shots to keep the viewer watching. Another thing I noticed was that the logo for the channel goes right in the middle of the screen and is a close up shot.

So while I am making my ident, it will have a few different shots to make it more interesting.
Plus when the idnet comes to an end the urban net logo will take to the centre of the screen in a close-up shot.

editing decisions
The editing in each ident I watched is very fast-paced and it syncs with the music in the background.

So when the ident reaches the editing stage the editing will be fast paced and won’t stay on the same screen for long. The ident will also have beat editing, which is when the editing cuts to the beat of the music.

Costume
Each ident I watched has their actors in regular clothing: IE jeans, trainers and a t-shirt.

In my ident the only time the audience sees the actor is towards the end of the ident. However they will be wearing regular clothing and a housecoat so it looks like they just got up. I believe that my target audience will be able to relate to this character.

locations
Most of the idents I watched had simple black backgrounds to them so the viewer would focus more on the animation. However one ident I saw had a urban background to it.

The locations in my idea are far grander: IE some famous landmarks. However as a contingency plan the logo-character will walk past different urban locations.

Narrative
In the idents I viewed for research, they lacked any sort of strong narrative and were just random characters and animation.

So my ident is also going to lack a narrative. My idea is just to have the U and N from the logo come to live, and walk across a large area to a student’s home.

Audience feedback, preferences and expectations
The audience seemed to enjoy how each of the idents was. They had lots of colour and fast-paced editing.

So my ident will also have bright colours. Namely green and purple as they are the channel’s signature colours. The editing will also be fast-paced.

Social Network responses (Distinction)

MERIT: Revisions made to the original idea need to be logged with reasons why

Cover each of  the following aspects in your response:
(MERIT) Your annotation – what revisions have you made to the original idea?
(MERIT) ...and Why?
Looking at other current examples - conventions
When I thought more about my idea I soon realized that it had most of the conventions of idents. However it lacked two conventions: a font style for text and a theme.

I’ve now added a unique font style that best represents Urban Net. Because I want the name of the channel to be stuck in the head of the audience. Plus it now has a theme of travelling which will leave an impression on the audience.
Audience likes and comments on exiting examples
I noticed that the audience really enjoy how smooth the editing was in each ident. So I changed my idea up to include smooth and fast editing.

Because if the editing was to slow and boring my target audience would lose interest.
Audience feedback, preferences and expectations from your Focus Group and Survey Monkey
The results from my survey monkey yielded that my target audience paid most attention towards the actual animation used.
In my ident, It’s impossible to animate it like the most preferred ident my audience chose. However in place of digitally animating it  the product is going to be unique.
